Theodore Roosevelt was hard core. Both his wife and his mother died on Valentine's Day in 1884. His response was to ride into the most desolate patch of the midwest he could find and just wander. Eventually, he became a sort of wild west deputy sheriff. He hunted down three criminals who had made the unwise decision to steal the boat of Theodore God Damn Roosevelt, captured them single handed, and then dragged them overland to the nearest center of law and order, going without rest for two days and nights.
He was shot in the middle of a political appearance, but refused medical attention until after he had a chance to finish the rest of his speech.
Like I said, Hard Core.
