Time wasn't exaggerating when she talked about the questionability of Voltaire's front-line status. He tried out being a spy for France while he was in Prussia, and the sadness wasn't that he was so distinctly bad at it, but that he thought he was doing Really Well. But, somehow, as with most things Voltaire, the very flagrancy of his spying somehow just makes him more adorable.
